Common Questions

How long is the program?
The PhD program requires a minimum of four full-time pre-internship years. In addition, students must complete a one-year internship. Six years is the average length of study. Students are eligible to apply for internship after passage of comprehensive examinations, submission of a Master's thesis for publication, and approval of a dissertation proposal.

What type of funding is available to PhD students?
At a minimum, all doctoral students receive a 50% tuition waiver for the four years that students pay tuition. All students in the cohort entering in fall 2020 received a 75% tuition waiver and students entering in fall 2021 received a 100% tuition waiver. At the time an offer of admission is extended, details on extended financial support will be described in the offer. Research assistantships are available for students, and these assistantships support research-related work with the student’s primary mentor. Additionally, there are teaching assistantships and other work study positions available both within the department and throughout the school.

When should I apply?
We begin accepting applications in September. The application deadline is December 16, 2021.

What happens after I apply?
Highly qualified applicants will be invited to interview during late January or early February 2022. The modality of interview day (in person versus virtual) is TBD.

Do I have to take the General or Advanced Psychology GRE for the application?
The GRE is no longer required for admission.

When do classes start?
Our University operates on a quarter system. Classes begin at the start of the fall quarter, which is mid-August. New students attend an orientation during the week before the fall quarter begins. Orientation attendance is mandatory.

Can I transfer into the program?
The College of Health Professions does not accept transfer students. On a case-by-case basis, the admissions committee will review graduate coursework to award credit once an applicant has been accepted and matriculated into the program. Please view the student policy and procedure manual for full information about transfer credit policies and procedures.
