SGPS Statement on Racial Inequality and Injustice

In response to recent national incidents of racial violence, including the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many more Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, indicative of systemic, institutionalized, and long-standing racial inequality and injustice, SGPS announces its position as a unified statement against racism in all its forms. This statement is the product of a combined effort from graduate students, staff members, postdoctoral researchers, faculty members, and administration. We stand together claiming, Black Lives Matter!

Academics

The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies provides academic programs leading to a variety of advanced degrees in biomedical sciences. PhD and Masters’ degrees in basic biomedical science research are available.

Students seeking a PhD enter the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS) and rotate through a variety of labs. This program provides foundational knowledge in biomedical sciences and offers numerous research opportunities for students to engage in their doctoral studies.  Students have the opportunity to explore a number of laboratory settings in research rotations during the first year.

For those students interested in combining a clinical degree with their doctoral studies, the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers combined MD/PhD, DPM/PhD, and PharmD/PhD degrees in conjunction with the University's Chicago Medical School, William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, and College of Pharmacy, respectively. These programs provide interdisciplinary and interprofessional experiences for careers that combine basic biomedical research and clinical practice.

From research that addresses fundamental questions of biomolecular structure and function to complex interdisciplinary systems biology, our students advance knowledge of the human condition while fulfilling their own personal and professional goals.
