In this episode, we provide an overview of lifestyle medicine, its six pillars, and how it plays a role in improving health outcomes.
Key Concepts
- Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is an evidence-based approach to preventing, treating, and even reversing diseases by replacing unhealthy behaviors with positives ones. LM can be incorporated in conjunction with any other type of medicine.
- The six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine include: nutrition, physical activity, avoidance of risky substances, sleep, social relationship, and stress.
- As an example, the “nutrition” pillar of LM focuses on a diet predominantly consisting of whole-food, plant-based nutrition.
- While many components of LM are incorporated into non-pharmacologic therapies in other forms of medicine, LM’s strong emphasis on these pillars as a critical component of health makes it unique.
