Frank A. Maldonado, MD
Dr. Frank Maldonado was appointed Associate Chief Medical Executive for Clinical Affairs for the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in 2007. Prior to this appointment he was appointed as Chief of Medicine in 2001. He currently serves as Executive Chair of Clinical Sciences at Chicago Medical School and holds an academic appointment as professor of medicine.
As Associate Chief Medical Executive for Clinical Affairs at the FHCC, Dr. Maldonado is responsible for the direction and coordination of all clinical functions and management. He has special interest in electronic health information exchange and is heavily involved with Information Technology (IT) for the FHCC. He serves as Clinical Champion for the VA electronic health record (CPRS) since 1997 and has been instrumental in providing clinician perspective on ongoing IT projects at the FHCC. Additionally, he is a clinical expert for orders portability, single-sign- on and single patient registration projects at the FHCC.
Dr. Maldonado received his medical degree from the University of Central del Caribe, Cayey, Puerto Rico, in 1982. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC in 1986 and subsequently completed Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowships in Chicago. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. He also completed the AMIA 10X10 (VA Health Informatics Certificate Program) in November 2013.
Prior to coming to the FHCC, he worked at the National Health Service Corps., Internal Medicine, Community Health of South Dade, Homestead, Florida. Dr. Maldonado also served as an Associate Intensivist, Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, Providence Hospital, Washington, DC. He continues he work as a full-time Faculty and Rounding Attending, Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Medicine, Lovell FHCC.
Dr. Maldonado is a Fellow of the American College of Chest. He has completed many research publications and abstracts. He is a recipient of the Henry Christian Award for Excellence in research, DuPont Pharmaceuticals/ACCP Young Investigator Award and the Max Harry Weil, MD Clinical Educator Award. He is also the recipient of the Vice Presidential Hammer Award for Reinventing Government for the Primary Care Program in 1994 and again in 1997 for the Compensation & Pension Joint Claims Team Award. More recently he received the Clinical Health Champion Award presented at the DoD/VA iEHR and HIE Summit in Washington, DC, on September 30, 2013.
Dr. Frank Maldonado was born and raised in Puerto Rico. He and his wife reside in Libertyville, IL, with their three sons.
