Janice L. Gilden, MD, MS, FCP, FACE
Dr. Janice L. Gilden is a professor of medicine and the program director for the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program at Chicago Medical School. She also serves as staff endocrinologist and Section Chief of Endocrinology at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). She is also Chair of the Research and Development Committee at the FHCC.
Dr. Gilden is involved in teaching medical, pharmacy, and physician assistant students as well as interns, residents, fellows, and practicing providers. She is world-known for her research on diabetes care and complications and autonomic nervous system disorders, as well as being actively involved in patient care.
Dr. Gilden received her BA and MS in cell biology cum laude from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She received her medical degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical College in Brooklyn, NY, in 1978. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at University of Illinois/Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL. She then did fellowship training in both Diabetes/Endocrinology and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Chicago.
In addition to many publications, she also reviews manuscripts in the field of autonomic neuropathy and diabetes health care for several medical journals. She lectures nationally and internationally and is well known for her work in the field of orthostatic hypotension and diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Gilden serves on committees of the Endocrine Society, the Association for Diabetes Programs, Diabetes Technology Society, Women in Endocrinology, American Autonomic Nervous System Society, and Academic Alliance for Internal Medicine. She is President of the Chicago Endocrine Club and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Clinical Endocrinologists, and is ex-officio of the American Autonomic Nervous System Society. Dr. Gilden is a member of the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society, Clinical Research Association, American Geriatrics Society, and Clinical Translational Research, as well as an associate member of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. Gilden has received several honors and awards, including American Diabetes Association Young Investigator’s Awards, Patient Care Award from the Fraternal Order of Eagles, American College of Physician-American Society of Internal Medicine Teacher’s Award, and Literary Key Awards for Research at Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center. She has also received citations by the Chicago Magazine as one of the top Endocrinologists and Diabetologists, and Top Endocrinologists for Women’s Health in the Chicago area, and is also cited by Cassells Guide to Medical Specialists. She has been named Teacher of the Year in Ambulatory Medicine, and she has been awarded for Excellence in Research Mentoring at RFUMS/CMS.
