Chicago Medical School Salon and Reception
The Chicago Medical School hosted a salon and reception on May 9 to celebrate the latest edition of its creative journal, Synapses, and the opening of a gallery exhibit featuring art and poetry from the journal.
The event featured poetry readings, art discussions, and other presentations by student and faculty authors and artists. Jordan Newman, CMS ’21, presented his digital artwork “James,” an interpretation of the scientific and human elements of Parkinson’s disease. Joanna Stecher, CMS '21, delivered a reading of her poem, “The Weight of Fear,” and Barbara Vertel, PhD, professor of cell biology and anatomy, shared her photographs “Bryce Canyon” and “Chicago Botanic Gardens Orchid Show.” Burt Brent, MD ’63, participated in the event via a pre-recorded video slideshow that described how his sculpture “Labyrinth,” which represents the structure of the inner ear, was inspired by his career as a plastic surgeon helping children who needed ear reconstruction.
Synapses is an annual publication featuring works of poetry, art, photography, fiction and non-fiction submitted by CMS faculty, staff, students, residents, fellows and alumni. The latest issue is available online, and the art exhibit is on display in the Scholl Gallery through June 7.
